I'm a huge fan of The Hunger Games, both the books and the movies. I saw the movie first and then felt like giving the books a chance, even though young adult literature is definitely not my thing. Heck, even just contemporary literature tends not to be my thing. But somehow I ended up reading the first book and I couldn't put it down. The same happened with Catching Fire and then Mockingjay. I thought the books were wonderfully written in a simple yet poignant language and I didn't want to leave the characters when I got to the end.
As for the movies, Jennifer Lawrence is, bar none, my favourite actress and I think they captured the books beautifully. And nobody could embody Katniss Everdeen better than my girl Jennifer.
We are now between movies and I just can't let The Hunger Games rest. So I'm putting together my very own series of looks representing each district. I am starting with District 12 - the last ones shall be first and all that - and giving you my interpretation of Panem's Coal Mining District.
Picture time!
This is not a tutorial post, so here's just a quick breakdown of the most noteworty elements of the look.
- The lips are OCC's Lip Tar in Feathered (a stark white) mixed with a matte neon yellow pigment.
- The face is painted with sheer white face paint first and the entire contouring is done with a matte black shadow by Flormar, which is the same I used for the eyes.
The look is inspired by life in District 12, mainly. Coal miners tend to be very pale because they work underground all day and of course, they get dirty during their work. I wanted to do some really smudgy, gritty-looking smokey eyes and have some dark contouring to evoke that. The eyes are winged slightly as a nod to Katniss and her symbol of the mockingjay.
My favourite part of this look are the yellow lips. They give this look an odd, slightly futuristic touch (and the Hunger Games world is, after all, set in the future) but most of all, I wanted them as a symbol of the canary in the coal mine. And the canary being a song bird, it fits well with Katniss' fondness of singing and her role as the harbinger and catalyst of a regime's downfall.
May the odds be ever in your favour,
Anna
